The Honeymoon Packing List (Every Climate, Every Trip Length)

Updated July 25, 2026

Honeymoon packing goes wrong in two directions: over-packing (dragging four bags through a cobblestone street) and under-packing (a beach trip with no reef-safe sunscreen and one dressy outfit).

This list is organized by trip type. Pack the universal essentials, then add the section that matches your destination.

Universal essentials

Passports (both — check expiration is at least 6 months out), driver's license, credit card that waives foreign transaction fees, one debit card kept separate from the credit card, printed copy of accommodation confirmations.

Prescription medications in original bottles, basic first-aid (bandages, ibuprofen, anti-diarrheal, motion-sickness pills), electrolyte packets.

Phone charger with the right plug adapter for the destination, portable battery, one physical copy of any offline maps and reservation numbers in case a phone dies.

A lightweight, packable day bag for excursions.

Beach and tropical

Reef-safe sunscreen (many islands now ban oxybenzone-based sunscreens). Aloe or after-sun.

Two swimsuits each — one dries while the other is in use.

Rash guard or UV shirt for long snorkel or beach days.

Beach cover-ups that work for lunch: dress, linen shirt, sandals that are not flip-flops.

Quick-dry towel if the resort does not provide beach towels.

City and cultural

Walking shoes already broken in. Blister prevention (Band-Aids or Compeed).

One outfit for a nice dinner each — many upscale restaurants have dress codes.

A scarf or wrap that doubles as modest cover for religious sites (churches, temples, mosques).

Small crossbody or zipped bag that is harder for pickpockets.

Adventure and outdoor

Hiking shoes or trail runners. Wool or synthetic socks (never cotton for long hikes).

Layers: base layer, insulating mid-layer, waterproof shell.

Refillable water bottle with a filter if tap water quality is uncertain.

Headlamp, not a phone flashlight, for early-morning or late excursions.

Frequently asked

What is the one thing most couples forget to pack?
A copy of the marriage certificate. Some resorts offer honeymoon perks (room upgrade, champagne) with proof — and some countries require proof of matching last names for shared reservations.
How much luggage do I actually need?
For most 7-10 day honeymoons, one carry-on and one checked bag per person is plenty. Resort trips often need less.
