Changing your name after marriage is straightforward but tedious. The order matters — some agencies require an updated Social Security card before they will accept the change.

This is a general US guide. Every state and every issuing agency has its own current requirements; verify with each before you file.

Before you start

Get 3-5 certified copies of your marriage certificate from the county clerk. Every major agency will want an original certified copy; photocopies are not accepted.

Decide the exact form of your new name. First-Middle-Married is the most common; First-Maiden-Married and hyphenated forms are equally valid but must match across every document.

Step 1: Social Security Administration

File Form SS-5 in person at a local SSA office or by mail. Bring your certified marriage certificate and government-issued photo ID.

There is no fee. A new card arrives in 2-4 weeks. Do not do the next steps until the SSA update is in the system (usually 10 days after filing).

Step 2: Driver's license / state ID

Requires the certified marriage certificate and, in most states, proof that SSA has updated your name. Book the DMV appointment 2-3 weeks after filing with SSA.

The new license usually costs $10-$30.

Step 3: Passport

Form DS-5504 if the passport is less than one year old (free); Form DS-82 otherwise (renewal fee, ~$130).

Requires the certified marriage certificate and the current passport. Do not travel internationally while the passport is being updated — you cannot fly on an expired or altered document.

Step 4: Everything else

Employer / HR (updates payroll, benefits, and W-2). Banks and credit cards. Investment and retirement accounts. Mortgage and loan servicers. Insurance policies (health, auto, life, home).

Utilities, subscriptions, professional licenses, voter registration, USPS mail forwarding if you are also moving.

Google account and any accounts tied to your legal name. Update your LinkedIn, professional email signature, and business cards.
